It is no secret that the west has kicked off winter with a bang. Whistler opened with a record amount of snow and most lifts are spinning in Lake Tahoe, Washington, and Oregon. With all the snow most of us are chomping at the bit to get out in the backcountry and take those ever so coveted untouched turns. However, having some snow safety education in your back pocket is not only extremely important it is now easier to obtain with the SAFE AS clinic series.
The SAFE AS is a pro rider founded, all women’s avalanche clinic that takes place at various resorts in the west throughout the month of December. The clinic (Skiers Advocating and Fostering Education and Snow Safety) founded by professional skiers Elyse Saugstad, Ingrid Backstrom, Michelle Parker, Jackie Paso and Lel Tone, plus philanthropist and yogi Sherry McConkey, aims to empower backcountry snow enthusiasts through positive snow safety education.
Each one-day event presents participants with the classroom and on-mountain curriculum of the AIARE Intro to Avalanche course, capped with morning yoga, beacon and group rescue practice, and an apres party and fundraiser with refreshments and tons of raffle prizes.
The first stop in the SAFE AS clinics takes place at Squaw Valley with three one-day clinics and the first ever co-ed clinic with Cody Townsend on December 11, 2016.
